Mobile phones and brain cancer.
Column 1 - Introduction
Love them or hate them, mobile phones are all around. One of the biggest industries of the last 20 years, most people on the planet today own one. In Africa, they are starting to be used as an alternative to landline phones due to a lack of infrastructure. It used to be that a mobile phone use was just for the Business professionals.
Nowadays however, they are considered by most to be a daily necessity.
But do we really know what impact mobile phones are having on us? It is a widespread notion that excessive use can lead to serious damage to our health. In a recent news story, British newspapers 'The Daily Telegraph' and 'The Daily Mail' claimed that 'Half an hour of mobile use a day increases brain cancer'. This has sparked further investigations into just how dangerous regular mobile phone use can be.
In the newspaper article, it was claimed that a landmark study into health risks from mobile phone use had found that using a phone for 30 minutes or more a day over 10 years would increase the risk of brain tumours.
This has fuelled concerns that the long-term side effects of mobile phone use are still far from certain and the common idea that there is a direct relationship between usage and the risk of brain cancer.
