Mobile phones and brain cancer.
Column 4 - Conclusions
The results of the international case control study found no significant link between mobile phone use and brain cancer. In fact, it found that the risk was lower in those who had regular mobile phone use in the past one year or more. However, as mentioned before, the case control study only highlights a potential association between the two rather than a direct link.
In order to get more conclusive results regarding any possible link, a prospective study could be used. This involves scientists following a population over time and waiting for cases to develop. This, however, could be extremely time consuming since brain tumours are rare and take a very long time to develop. In addition, to make the study statistically significant, a large number of participants would be necessary, making it even less viable.
Also, given the extreme unlikelihood of any significant relationship between the two (since the radiowave frequency from a mobile phone doesn’t actually break DNA strands), it would seem an expensive and time-consuming study with little chance of any real finding.
